CATERINA BARBIERI: "PERENNIAL FANTAS"

"Perennial Fantas" coincides with Caterina Barbieri's inaugural performance alongside Space Afrika on Berlin Atonal's main stage, scheduled for tomorrow, September 7. This follows her successful sold-out performances at renowned venues such as London's Barbican and New York's Pioneer Works.

Following the reissue of "Ecstatic Computation" in July and the release of its sister album"Myuthafoo" from the same 2019 sessions earlier this Summer, "Perennial Fantas" arrives as the next musical gem in Barbieri's illustrious career. This release follows the impressive 2021 releases of"Fantas Variations" and "Spirit Exit," showcasing Barbieri's penchant for collaboration with experimental talents like Lyra Pramuk, saxophonist Bendik Giske, and acclaimed composers like Kali Malone and Kara-Lis Coverdale.

"Perennial Fantas" takes listeners on an otherworldly journey, capturing the essence of witnessing the birth and fiery demise of a celestial star. Barbieri's spellbinding transformation of "Fantas" propels this eerie melody towards a spectacular supernova climax, welcoming us into an entirely new dimension.

Caterina Barbieri is currently experiencing the pinnacle of her career — you can find her even portrayed in Aphex Twin’s latest shows. Over nearly a decade, Barbieri has pushed the boundaries of electronic music, seamlessly blending academic experimentation, dance rhythms, and pop sensibilities.

A significant chapter in her journey began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Elektronmusikstudion in 2017, where she laid the sonic groundwork for her breakthrough album, "Patterns of Consciousness" (Important Records). Expanding upon this foundation, "Ecstatic Computation" (Editions Mego) in 2019 garnered widespread acclaim for its fusion of minimalism and captivating synthesizer experimentation. This marked the beginning of Barbieri's distinctive artistic expression, earning her recognition as an avant-garde innovator. Pitchfork hailed Barbieri's musical journey as "mind-altering" and "a dream machine for the ears."

Since then, Barbieri has continuously pushed boundaries and defied expectations, culminating in the release of the evocative and intricately layered "Spirit Exit." This album marked the birth of her own label, light-years, and showcased her unique musical vision. Her immersive live shows expanded the boundaries of her artistry by incorporating additional voices like Bendik Giske, Nkisi, and Lyra Pramuk, accompanied by custom visuals crafted by Marcel Weber AKA MFO, and Ruben Spini.

Caterina Barbieri's influence has resonated globally with notable performances at Berlin Atonal, Mutek, Unsound, Sonar, Primavera Sound, Dekmantel, Barbican Centre, Philharmonie de Paris, and the Biennale di Venezia. Beyond her captivating live presence, she has contributed her compositional expertise to Pascual Sisto's film "John and the Hole" and graced the shows of esteemed fashion houses such as Fendi, Gucci, Calvin Klein, and Off-White with her sonic artistry.
